New hybrid fireboat for Kiel Fire Brigade

10 September, 2024

The Kiel Fire Brigade has received a new hybrid fireboat, the e-FiFi 1470, built by Kewatec, which has been named “Dat Füürschipp.” The name refers to the Low German word for “lightship,” describing a floating lighthouse at sea, designed to prevent dangerous situations. The christening of the boat took place in a historic setting behind the Museum Bridge, where the former fireboat is still anchored.

City Councilor Christian Zierau welcomed the audience at the event, and Mayor Bettina Aust officially named the boat. “Dat Füürschipp” represents modern maritime safety, and in her christening speech, Mayor Aust emphasized the importance of water safety for the city of Kiel.

The boat arrived in Kiel in the summer after a long journey of 1,000 nautical miles through the Finnish archipelago. The vessel is equipped with both diesel and electric propulsions, making it fast, maneuverable, and environmentally friendly.

The Kiel Fire Brigade now plans to focus on training with the boat, and starting later this fall, “Dat Füürschipp” will be on standby 24/7 for rescue missions.
